The Fingerspellers

The Fingerspellers - General

'The Fingerspellers' is a stylish yet silly comedy series about a family of deaf gangsters who protect themselves with the power of their hands - firing bullets with their fingers, instead of guns!

The family live in monochrome Metro City during the 1950s, working to support the local deaf community through criminal means, offering them money and jobs to keep them afloat.

'Deaffather' is the head of the family, supported by his children, Sonny and Bella. When he stockpiles a new invention called the Textphone, a feud begins with a rival family called the Operas that threatens the family's monopoly.

'The Fingerspellers' was written by Charlie Swinbourne and directed by William Mager. The series stars a host of deaf actors - Ilan Dwek, Matthew Kirby, Rebecca-Anne Withey, Stephen Collins, Diana Martin, Matthew Gurney and David Hirshman, as well as a host of cameo appearances!

Episode One synopsis

When a deaf lady arrives upset at Deaffather's office, Sonny, Bella and Cuddles are forced to hold her babies - all seven of them! After the woman explains her husband's problems finding work, Deaffather offers him a job as the new delivery man.

The next appointment is with the Opera family, who arrive with a new invention - the Textphone. Deaffather's mood darkens when they accuse him of buying all the Textphones and hiding them! In turn, Deaffather says they are only interested in money.

The new delivery man is looking for Deaffather's office when he gets a nasty surprise - he is ambushed by Manny Opera and his uncle in a dark alleyway. A few moments later, Deaffather, Sonny and Bella are shocked when they see a familiar face arrive in the office...
