Robert Giles is the patient for this week's Wicked Appointment - with Wicked's film guru recommending an old black and white classic - all about the meaning of life. It's called Ikiru and the film was made by the legendary Japanese director Akira Kurosawa.
Dr Buff reviews Ikiru:
Ikiru means 'to live' in Japanese and asks how we can find meaning in our life.
The central character is a middle aged office worker who is diagnosed with fatal cancer early in the film.
Knowing he does not have long left, he at first is full of self-pity, but soon, he discovers a new enthusiasm for life and tries to do just one thing that will live on after his death.
The film was made in 1952 and is known to be one of Steven Spielberg's favourites. Despite it's age, it tells a story which is still relevant today.
The director, Kurosawa, is a world-famous Japanese director well-known for films full of action and fighting sequences. This film does not have a lot of action, but is incredibly powerful for the story it tells.
