In this week's film review segment - Wicked Appointment - Dr Buff prescribes more films instead of medication, proving that film can do more than just entertain!
Dr Buff meets Sandra Campbell, and prescribes her a film very close to her heart - which also fits in with the running theme of the show! It's called 'The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner.'
Dr Buff writes:
The Loneliness of the Long Distance runner is a classic British film and was released in 1962.
It features a rebellious young man, who has been put in a boy's prison for robbing a bakery.
The boy has a talent for running long distances, and in the prison, this makes him the favourite of the authoritarian governor, who sees the boy as a perfect opportunity to show off the prison's rehabilitation programme.
However, while running on his own the boy realizes that the only way he can gain true independence and self-esteem, is to defy the governor's authority. In this way the film becomes essentially about freedom.
