Questions & Answers

Q: How is the Trust funded?

There is a legal requirement for channels to provide in-vision signing.  Channels can now ‘opt-out’ and pay a fee to the BSLBT Trust which will, in turn, provide BSL-presented programmes.

Q: Why are we having BBC & C4 repeats?

At the start, BSLBT needed time for companies to submit tenders and produce the programmes.  The BSLBT was working to very tight deadlines as laid down by Ofcom.  That is why the Trust transmitted programmes that have been previously broadcast by the BBC and C4.  From time to time, the Trust will transmit some of the popular BSL presented programmes from these Broadcasters.

Q: What happens if I don’t have digital television?  I only have access to the five terrestrial channels.  How will these changes affect me?

These changes will not affect you at the moment.  BBC One, BBC Two, ITV1, Channel 4 and Five will continue to provide sign-interpreted programming. Although don’t forget that by 2012 everyone will have to have digital television, as the government is switching off the analogue signal.

Q: What about other channels?  And, can I still watch my favourite soaps?

BBC, ITV, C4, C5 and others will still be producing in-vision signed programmes. A full list is given below.

BBC1 BBC2 BBC3 BBC4 BBC News
