The Story

A thought-provoking drama about deaf identity.

A young deaf girl learns sign language to try and find herself, but instead becomes caught between the deaf and hearing worlds

My Song is the debut drama from C&B Films, a new production company headed by director William Mager and scriptwriter Charlie Swinbourne, aiming to tell stories that express deaf culture in an original, compelling way.

Starring Lara Steward, My Song is a coming of age story which follows Ellen, a young deaf girl stuck in the middle of the deaf and hearing worlds.

Feeling as if she doesn’t fit in, Ellen learns sign language, attempting to enter the deaf world by taking part in a sign song competition in London.

The Team

The third collaboration between writer Charlie Swinbourne and director William Mager, My Song is a departure from their earlier work, taking a much more serious tone, with a hard hitting message. The film went into production in November 2010 and was completed in March 2011.

My Song features a breakout performance by young deaf actress Lara Steward (The Silence, BBC1), supported by Cassie Raine (Casualty BBC1), Will Dunn (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2) and deaf actors David Hay (Coming Out, Stand by your Man, BBC2) and Daryl Jackson (Switch, BBC2). There’s also fantastic cinematography by David Marsh, known for his work on Downton Abbey.

My Song is premiering at Deaffest at 7.45pm on Friday 20th May.
