VS1 was established as a voluntary organisation by David Ellington, Samuel Dore and Mac Dunlop in 2003. It organised the first ever Deaf Film Festival in Bristol. The aim of the festival was to encourage Deaf Filmgoers and people, based in the South West Region, interested in British Sign Language, based in the South West Region, to enjoy films and animation created by and for Deaf people. The festival was a huge success and highlighted both the bridges and walls between Deaf and hearing cultures.

As the result of the success of the festival, VS1 was set up to encourage and stimulate more creative work from within the Deaf Community.

We produced our film 'Danny' in 2008, a serious 16 minute drama. The film has won 3 best short films awards - this helped us to push ahead the boundaries with more experience of dynamic creative approaches and utilising digital production.

When BSLBT announced 'Zoom' tendering round, we thought it would be a great challenge to be involved. We were commissioned by BSLBT to create the 27' comedy drama - '50/50'.

We intended to and succeeded in casting new Deaf talent and crew, who have a little or no experience. Working as a team we supported and shared experiences and identified new ways of doing things.

This drama was shot on the EX3, - 'we thought it was the perfect time to get upgrade shots, unbelievably it looked great and gave the film a cinematic look'.

Our next venture is to expand more creative ideas and stories with new productions. Our objective is to encourage new raw deaf talent and create opportunities for Deaf crews in both film and TV.
